A qubit is a promise that decoheres — a fragile superposition that collapses the moment the surrounding system gets too warm, too noisy, or too poorly isolated. The frontier, in practice, is not the qubit. It is everything wrapped around it.
That reframing matters for where the money should go. A nation can announce a thousand-qubit target and still ship nothing useful if it skips the unglamorous layers underneath: the cryogenics, the control electronics, the error-correction stack, the fabrication tolerances, the supply chain for materials measured in parts per billion. India's National Quantum Mission, with its multi-thousand-crore outlay, is best read not as a race to a qubit number but as an attempt to build those layers at once — to manufacture an ecosystem, not a press release.
This is also where the commercial opportunity hides. The companies that win the early deep-tech decades are rarely the ones with the flashiest end-product; they are the ones that own a chokepoint in the stack — the dilution refrigerator, the specialised control chip, the EDA tooling, the foundry slot. For Indian founders and investors, the strategic question is less "can we build a quantum computer" and more "which layer of the global deep-tech supply chain can India credibly own." That is a sober, capital-allocation question. It is the question this publication exists to follow.
